2016 Hurricane Season Forecast

2016 Hurricane Season

The 2016 Atlantic hurricane season forecast released from Colorado State University in April calls for the number of named storms and hurricanes to be near historical averages. A total of 12 named storms, five hurricanes and two major hurricanes are expected this season. These numbers do not include Hurricane Alex, a rare occurrence that hit the Azores in mid-January. The official hurricane season spans from June through November. However, as illustrated by Hurricane Alex, the formation of tropical cyclones is possible at any time of the year.

“the number of storms and when they strike doesn’t particularly matter. Because it only takes one.”

Most forecasting groups have called for this season to be an above average season, due to a combination of factors including a transition to La Niña and warmer than normal sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico. But as pointed out by Eric Fisher,Chief Meteorologist at CBS Boston, whether the forecast is in line with the average or above it “the number of storms and when they strike doesn’t particularly matter. Because it only takes one.”

Take Hurricane Isaac for example in 2012. Isaac was a deadly and destructive tropical cyclone that came ashore in the state of Louisiana during August 2012. The ninth named storm and fourth hurricane of the annual hurricane season caused $2.39 billion USD in damage and led to 41 fatalities (breakingnews.com).

It’s never too late to make sure that you’re prepared for an emergency or loss of power. As a business owner, planning for an emergency power situation requires choosing a standby power solution. While some solutions can be quite costly, ESL’s pre-wired UL 1008 emergency quick connect equipment is very cost-effective. In addition, it provides users with a safe and simple operation to connect portable power in minutes minimizing the interruption of business operation and associated costs.

We can’t stop hurricanes, but we can mitigate risk, both to our lives and our property, by being proactive. Plan ahead. The first step is to evaluate what type of transfer switch is most suitable for your application. Be prepared. Learn more about manual transfer switches and emergency power preparedness statistics. ESL’s Power Metering & Reefer Monitoring Assembly

Power metering and reefer monitoring assembly

ESL Power Systems, Inc. and Refrigerated Transport Electronics have teamed up to offer an integrated solution encompassing Reefer Outlets, Revenue-grade Power Metering and Reefer Monitoring. This system provides a single source of information for reefers while reporting energy consumption per reefer with revenue-grade accuracy.

The monitoring system uses power meters that can be integrated with RTE’s GRASP software. ESL’s assembly can be designed for multi-gang configurations in multiple mounting options.

Terminals can gain significant value from real data on reefer power consumption. With reefer containers accounting for up to 50% of a terminals total electric consumption, improving reefer management can deliver significant savings by providing necessary data. Power parameters measured with this new system include total power consumption, RMS current and voltage, frequency and power factor. This system also measures reefer parameters including Container ID, Sensor Valves; temperature, air, moisture, etc., Reefer operations; fan speeds, controller modes and Pre-trip state & alarms.

The potential impact for terminals and reefer service providers worldwide will be significant for understanding actual consumption, the baseline carbon footprint and improving terminal energy efficiency.

ESL Celebrates 25 Years!

blog-header_25th_Party_Recap

On April 21st ESL celebrated our 25th Anniversary with customers, vendors, friends and family at our facility in Corona, CA. The highlight of the night was catching up with the many individuals whom have helped us get to where we are today.

ESL's 25th Anniversary

Founded in 1991, ESL began as a custom control panel business located in Yorba Linda, CA with just 4 part-time assemblers. In 1995, ESL Power Systems, Inc. emerged as a manufacturer of safety-interlocked reefer outlets, and soon began to develop cord-connected electrical power equipment for a wide variety of industrial and commercial applications. Thirteen years after founding, the ESL Family of Companies moved 8 miles east to our current facility in Corona, CA. After 25 exciting years, ESL Power Systems, Inc. now operates once again as a single company and has over 130 employees. We are one of the largest manufacturers of reefer outlets worldwide supporting Intermodal Container industry and Port Terminals, and we are known as the “best-in-class” builders of Ship-to-Shore Power Mounds, Company Switches for Set Stage applications, and also for our StormSwitch and TripleSwitch product lines for back-up power solutions during grid outages. And, of course, ESL is still the premier Custom Control panel Builder in Southern California!

ESL thanks those who have contributed to our success the past 25 years and we look forward to continuing to work with you for many years to come!
