Tips to Perform Maintenance Checks on Reefer Outlets

One thing many of us have in common is the tendency to procrastinate – like avoiding trips to the dentist. As we all know, not routinely taking care of those chompers will more than likely result in added cost and agony later down the road, but we still might choose to skip the appointment. Neglecting to routinely maintain electrical equipment, such as reefer outlets, can also result is the same negative consequences – added cost and severe pain.

By taking the time to perform regular inspection and routine maintenance, potential injury to the operator is minimized and the lifespan of the reefer outlet(s) will be improved. Here are a few tips to get the best value and reliability out of electrical reefer outlets:

  • Inspection and maintenance should only be performed on equipment after power has been turned off, disconnected, and electrically isolated.
  • Maintenance of equipment should be conducted by qualified personnel.
  • If there is an accumulation of dust, dirt, soot, grease or moisture on surfaces or components, clean with an appropriate tool (stiff bristle brush, etc.).
  • Inspect receptacles for any cracks or breakage.  If any are found, replace the component.  Inspect the pins and/or contact sleeves.  Look for signs of heating (discoloration) or arcing (pitting).  If any are found, replace the receptacle contact sleeves.
  • Check that all receptacle covers properly close and seal against the face of the receptacle.
  • Visually check all conductors and connections to be certain that they are clean and secure.   Parts which show evidence of overheating or looseness should be cleaned and re-torqued or replaced if damaged.
  • Carefully inspect all visible electrical joints and terminals in the bus and wiring system.  Check and re-tighten all accessible electrical connections to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
  • Examine circuit breakers’ molded case for cracks. Breakers should be replaced if cracks are found.
  • Operate each switch or circuit breaker several times to ensure that all mechanisms are in proper working order. Verify that the mechanism operates freely to its full on and off positions. Replace as required.
  • Check the integrity of all electrical and mechanical interlocks and padlocking mechanisms.
  • Check the seals on all conduits.  If moisture is present inside the enclosure it is important to remove it and prevent any future intrusion.  Poor sealing of conduits is the cause of this.
  • Desiccant should either be replaced or re-activated.
